ARE YOU LIVING YOUR LIFE ON AUTOPILOT?
We're so comfortable we're miserable. Get out of it and start living intentionally.
We as a species generally like what's familiar and easy. Our lives have a repetitive nature. We go to work, come home, eat dinner, do something we enjoy and go to bed. And then we repeat the same routine the next day and the next day and the next day. With some exceptions on the weekends and when we go on vacation.
The problem is that in order to make progress, change your life and move forward, you have to embrace discomfort. The discomfort of going to a networking event where you know no one. The discomfort of working out when you absolutely don't feel like it. The discomfort of moving to a country where you don't speak the language.
Dean Karnazes, ultramarathon runner, share his insight:
"Western culture has things a little backwards right now. We think that if we had every comfort available to us, we'd be happy. We equate comfort with happiness. And now we're so comfortable we're miserable. There's no struggle in our lives. No sense of adventure. We get in a car, we get in an elevator, it all comes easy. What I've found is that I'm never more alive than when I'm pushing and I'm in pain, and I'm struggling for high achievement, and in that struggle I think there is magic."
Most of our accomplishments, the things we're proud of, are a result of getting comfortable with discomfort. Allowing yourself to just move on autopilot, stuck in the same routines and patterns won't get you to live intentionally. Discomfort is the price of admission for personal growth.
"Routines become so familiar to that we often lose track of the fact that we're just cruising through life. Despite the fact that we live in an enormous universe with seven different continents, nearly 200 different countries, more than 7 billion people, thousands of languages, and hundreds of thousands of unique experiences, we stick to what we know. Then we wonder why we feel stuck, stale and stagnant."
We're so busy running our lives and often don't get intentional with how we spend that little free time that we have. We spend it scrolling on Instagram or watching cat videos on YouTube. That will keep you lost in your comfort zone.
New experiences release dopamine in our brains and create new neurons and neural pathways. The more unknown and challenging the experience, the better.
All you have to do is try new things, talk to new people, go to the park that you've never visited, learn that language that you have always wanted to learn. It's a powerful approach to living a more intentional life.
